Introducing James from JamesJustNow

One of my goals with blogging this year, is to start sharing some of the content that I love and a bit about the creators behind them. So, here I am, with the first entry into my skincare mini series. I’ve asked some of my favourite bloggers, and Instagrammers some skincare questions, and what better guy to kick off the series with than James, from JamesJustNow.

James is an incredible content creator and I’ve followed him for the longest time. Not only is James a seriously nice guy, but his fashion sense is completely enivable and his skincare recommendations are top notch. Let’s forget that he lives in my favourite country, because I’m still incredibly jealous of that.

Firstly, tell us a bit about you…

Hi, I’m James. A London based hair colourist and content creator for menswear, lifestyle and skincare.

What’s your skin type?

Normal to dehydrated depending on the time of year.

What are your skin concerns?

Fine lines! Grrrr

What are 3 products you can’t live without?

A decent balm or cream cleanser, a hyaluronic acid serum and SPF.

What is the last product you purchased?

Bioderma ultra gentle shower gel. It’s especially good if you have sensitive skin or allergies.

What is your last product empty?

Clinique dark spot defense SPF 50 which ran out last week. It’s a tinted SPF with vitamin C. I love it but I have a feeling it’s being discontinued as it’s really hard to find.

When did you start using skincare and why?

One of my best mates is a facialist, about 10 years ago she introduced me to exfoliating acids, serums and LED facial treatments which are amazing for overall skin health. In the last 2-3 years I have been taking my routine seriously. This is partly due to the blog as I test and review new products but I’ve always been into skincare.

If you could only ever use products from one brand, what brand would it be and why?

That’s hard as I love to cherry pick hero products from different brands. But if it had to be one I would choose Paula’s Choice. They offer everything from body, hair and skincare with great active ingredients. The products are nearly always excellent with really fair pricing for what you get.

If you could give one piece of skincare advice, what would it be?

Use an SPF every single day. Day light and sun is damaging to skin and can cause skin cancer. A bit of sun can be good for our health and happiness but unfortunately we don’t get enough in the UK. So I take a liquid vitamin D3 supplement from Solgar which helps.

Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream

One of my favourite moisturisers just got even better. I’ve used Dermalogica’s Skin Smoothing Cream since I was 16, and it’s one of the face products I always go back to. So I’m sure you can imagine my excitment when I found out that it’s been reformulated, to give even more hydration.

Skin Smoothing Cream now has 48 hours worth of continuous hydration. And not only that, but it also protects your skin against environmental stress, which is perfect for someone living in the city like me.

How does it work?

Well, here’s a bit of science for you. Dermalogica’s Skin Smoothing Cream has something that they call Active HydraMesh Technology™. The cream esentially forms a barrier across your skin’s surface, that helps to lock in moisture and prevent water loss. This also allows the active ingredients, including Mallow and Cucumber, to do their job more effectively.

I learnt that your skin can lose up to half a litre of water a day, and this moisturiser helps to prevent that. Dermalogica even run clinical trials on the product, and found that after 48 hours, skin still remained hydrated. Impressive, right?

What’s the texture like?

Whenever I hear a product gives long-lasting hydration, I always expect them to have a heavier consistency. Skin Smoothing Cream is actually surprisingly light, and has an almost ‘slippy’ feel that I’d compare to a gel-like cream. It almost feels like water, which is probably due to the Hyaluronic Acid in the product, and it sinks straight into my skin.

Does it actually work?

I really put this to the test, like legit. For the purpose of this review, I applied Dermalogica’s Skin Smoothing Cream on Monday morning, and didn’t wash my skin for 48 hours. Do you know how tough that is?

Alas, I endured it, and I’m impressed. Overall, my skin still felt moisturised. There was a slight bit of dryness around my nose, but Manchester has been thrown into an early Winter, so I’m not mad about that.

I love how this cream feels when you apply it to the skin, and first impressions are everything. The smell also reminds me of university, because I used it while I studied, so that’s pleasant!

You’re probably sick of me going on about Dermalogica, but I honestly can’t rave about this brand enough. Everything I’ve ever tried from them, actually works! And I’ve never been dissapointed. I recently switched out my whole routine for Dermalogica, which you can read more about here.

I’d said previously on an Instagram story that Dermalogica was my second favourite brand, but I think after using this new formula of Skin Smoothing Cream, they might have fought their way up to first place.

What’s your favourite product from Dermalogica? Let me know in the comments or on Instagram.

Mankind Christmas Collection Review and Giveaway

For the past three years, Mankind have released a Christmas Collection and it’s never disappointed. This year, the Mankind Christmas Collection is back, and I wanted to let you know my thoughts.

mankind christmas collection

This year I’m not just reviewing it, but I’m also giving one away. The team at Mankind have been incredibly kind and have sent me two, so one of them will be on it’s way to one of you. If you want to know more about how to enter, head over to my Instagram, but otherwise continue reading to see what’s inside.

Get the Mankind Christmas Collection quickly, before it sells out.

Firstly, what is the Mankind Christmas Collection?

To put it quite bluntly, it’s the perfect Christmas gift! It’s a selection of full sized grooming products that help form a full routine. Mankind have released these for a couple of years now, and it’s almost like a bigger and better version of their general Grooming Box. This year, it’s worth more than ever, and you can get over £475 worth of products for just £100. Yeah, you read that right. Almost FIVE TIMES that value of product compared to what it costs.

What products do you get?

The line up this year is pretty impressive. A couple of my favourite brands are included such as Omorovicza, Hanz de Fuko, ARgENTUM, Elemis and Molton Brown. For those 5 products alone, I’d consider getting this collection. Here’s the full product selection:

  1. Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream
  2. Men-U Facial Wash
  3. Korres Fig Shower Gel
  4. ARgENTUM L’Etoile Infinie
  5. Anthony Shower Sheets
  6. Hanz de Fuko Claymation
  7. Avant Anti-Aging Glycolic Firming Eye Contour Cream
  8. Regenerate Advanced Foaming Mouthwash
  9. Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather
  10. Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask
  11. Recipe for Men Deodorant
  12. Molton Brown Tobacco Absolute Bath and Shower Gel

Overall, it’s a pretty impressive selection and I’m really impressed that Mankind have managed to get all of these brands involved. One thing this box is lacking compared to the previous ones is a facial tool. We’ve previously had a Foreo Luna and a Gentlemen’s Tonic Razor, so that’s a bit of a shame. I’m also not sure how I feel about there being 3 shower products, but that’s just me being pernickety.

However, here are my favourite products from the box and a little bit more about why I love them.

mankind christmas collection omorovicza

Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask

This is possibly one of my all time favourite face masks. This will actually be the third one I’ve used, and it’s perfect timing because I’ve just run out of my previous one. This face mask is super luxurious, and works to draw out any impurities from the skin. It’s also enriched with Hungarian thermal waters, which help to calm, and soothe the skin – making this mask an all around winner.

mankind christmas collection hanz de fuko

Hanz de Fuko Claymation

The haircare selection from Hand de Fuko is next to none. It’s got such a cult following around the world, and I’m a massive fan of Gravity Paste. However now that my hairs shorter, and I’ve been straightening it less, I’ve been loving more matte textured hair products. And this definitely does the job. It’s high hold, low shine, and holds your style all day.

mankind christmas collection argentum

ARgENTUM L’Etoile Infinie

If you’re looking for the height of luxurious skincare, you can’t get much better than ARgENTUM. L’Etoile Infinie is a face oil that helps to protect and hydrate, which is perfect for these colder months. It feels so nice when you apply it, and it can be used alone or along with your moisturiser, which is how I apply it.

mankind christmas collection anthony

Anthony Shower Sheets

This is a bit of a strange product, but I’m a fan. Now I’m not saying I don’t shower, but I have this thing where I always want to feel clean. There’s nothing more frustrating than having a hot day, and not being able to shower until you get home. They’re great for a bit of a post-work pick-me-up, and they smell amazing. Would 100% recommend.

mankind christmas collection regenerate

Regenerate Advanced Foaming Mouthwash

Regenerate’s toothpaste is seriously incredible, and this mouthwash follows in it’s footsteps. I’ve had so many of the toothpastes, and everytime I pass it on to a family member, they fall in love. This mouthwash is different as it actually foams. You just spray it straight into your mouth, swish it around, and rinse. I’m a fan, and I’m sure you will be too.

If you’re looking to be a hit at Christmas, give this as a gift and you’ll be onto a winner. And this also includes giving it as a gift to yourself.

Make sure you head over to Mankind and get your hands on the Christmas Collection before it sells out. It usually goes pretty fast, so don’t wait around!

I was sent two products, one to review, and one to giveaway. All opinions are 100% honest and my own.

Your skincare questions, answered

I recently put out a question on Instagram, and asked you all to submit your skincare questions. So, here I am, answering them for you.

Now I’m not a doctor, and I don’t claim to be one, but I do have a background in skincare so I’d like to think I have an idea of what I’m talking about. Of course, all opinions below are my own, so don’t come for me if you don’t agree. But leave a comment and let’s chat!

How can I look younger?

Oooft, the question we all want answers to. If you’re looking to reduce the signs of aging, I’d recommend a product with vitamin C in, as it not only helps with collagen production, but helps even out skin tone. You could also use a product with Retionol in, but don’t use it alongside vitamin C, because they could potentially clash.

However my number one tip when it comes to looking younger is keeping hydrated! Dehydrated skin can actually have a tissue paper texture, which can look like aged skin.

What are the best brands for oily skin?

Whenever someone asks about oily skin, I always recommend La Roche-Posay. Their effeclar range is incredible, and affordable. I actually use one of their clay masks that helps to mattify, but my sister also uses their face cleanser.

What’s the best placenta cream?

Thank you, next.

Do anti aging creams actually work?

Yes! Well, if you get the right one. Anti aging creams work in a number of ways, but most help to stimulate collagen production or increase skin cell turnover. Collagen is basically the protein in your skin that helps plump it up, and prevent wrinkles. Think of a wrinkle as a part of your skin that doesn’t have any support underneath, collagen boosting creams help with that.

When anti aging products talk about increasing skin cell turnover, the ingredients essentially give your skin a boost that makes new skin cells rise to the top. As a rule of thumb, your age is how long it takes your skin to renew. So as an example, I’m 27, which means my skin takes 27 days to run it’s cycle. A boosting cream will speed up that process, meaning new skin appears quicker, giving the appearance of a younger complexion.

How can I reduce under eye bags?

This is a tough one! Most under eye bags are genetic, and you’re essentially just seeing the blood flow through the skin as it’s so thin. However the best way to reduce their appearance, is to use a product that increases the blood flow. Simple. I’d recommend using something with caffeine in, or something with a cooling sensation.

How can I reduce blackheads?

I have a little routine I like to follow for this. Firstly, I exfoliate my skin to remove any dead skin cells that are blocking my pores. I’ll then either jump in a hot shower, or steam my face so that it opens the pores and softens my skin. From there, I’ll apply a soft clay mask, that acts like a suction cup around my pores, helping to remove the black heads.

I know it’s pretty taboo, but I even apply some gentle pressure to edge the blackheads out after this. Obviously, make sure your hands are clean. And then always apply a toner afterwards to help close your pores, and prevent any oil getting clogged again.

What’s the best beard oil?

I don’t have much experience with this, however I did use a product from Clinique that is an all in one face hydrator, that also conditions your beard! But for a specific beard oil, Jack Black have a good one!

Best tinted moisturiser for men without it looking like makeup?

I’ve used a BB Cream from Filorga for the longest time. It’s some kind of potion that actually adapts to your skin colour, so it looks incredibly natural. I also like the tinted moisturisers from MMUK Man and MYEGO that are more affordable and have a natural finish.

Jack Black or Kiehl’s products for men? What’s better?

I love Kiehl’s products, and their mens range is pretty impressive. They have an Oil Eliminator range that uses NASA technology, which is pretty impressive. Jack Black really excel when it comes to beard products though.

What products can’t you live without?

At the minute, it’s my MALIN+GOETZ Recovery Treatment Oil. It’s one of my favourite products, and my skin freaks out if I don’t use it. I did a full post about it here. I also don’t think I could live without Dermalogica’s Skin Smoothing Cream. I’ve been trying the new formula and it’s really incredible.

What products aren’t worth the hype?

Magnetic face masks or those black peel off masks. I don’t think either of them are particularly effective, and for the most part, have a jacked up price because they’re ‘fancy’. I’ve also seen a lot of bloggers loving Weleda Skin Food recently, which I’m not really a fan of. I found it to be overly greasy, and not really do much – but maybe that’s just me.

What products can’t you mix together?

The first thing that comes to my mind is vitamin C and retinol. As they’re both so so active, they can cause irritation and sensitivity. If they’re already in a product together, chances are they’ve been stablised. But be careful if you’re applying a retinol serum by one brand, followed by a vitamin C moisturiser from another. Your skin might flush – I know mine does.

Hopefully you found this post useful – I know I enjoyed writing it!

Dermalogica Skincare Essentials

If you’re interested in skincare, you’ll have heard of Dermalogica. Even if you’re not, you’ve probably still heard of them.

I’ve invested in Dermalogica for the longest time, and have several reviews of products across my blog including their Phyto Replenish Oil and Charcoal Resuce Masque. It’s honestly one of my favourite skincare brands, so I’m super excited to officially part of their Skinfluencer programe and test out a number of products from their range.

For the past couple weeks, I’ve been using 5 products from Dermalogica and wanted to share my thoughts. The products I’ve been using are listed below, and they’re not only in order of use, but also in order of my preference!

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel

This is officially my new favourite cleanser. What most people don’t know, is that I’m actually incredibly sensitive to soap, so it’s music to my ears when I hear this product is soap free. The Special Cleansing Gel is a foaming cleanser than can be used by all skin types and helps to wash away impurities without stripping the skin. The scent is a combination of lavendar and mint, which I’m honestly in love with – it’s so refreshing, yet calming. When I use this cleanser, my skin feels clean, but not too clean. Like it actually feels soft, hydrated and soothed – which I’m all about.

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is £32

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

My second favourite product from the collection is the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. I’ve actually used this exfoliator for a while now, and even featured it on my blog in the past. Read more here. I couldn’t speak any more highly of this product. It’s a powder that is activated with water, creating a gentle exfoliator. It’s suitable for daily use, and that’s exactly what I do. After cleansing, I apply daily microfoliant to my skin. It’s packed full of rice powder to help exfoliate, but also papain and salicylic acid to exfoliate even deeper. There are so many great ingredients in this product; I really couldn’t list them all down. I’d just 100% recommend you give this a go if you’re looking for an effective daily exfoliator.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is £49.50

Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum

Biolumin-C is one of the latest additions to the Dermalogica skincare family. Dermalogica, what took you so long to create a Vitamin C serum? This product helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and let’s face it, I’m not getting any younger. So this product is a must! It helps to brighten, firm and protect the skin against daily agressors, so it’s perfect for ageing city skin like mine. It’s got a lovely citrus scent, but it’s not irritating on the skin. This product is my third favourite, only because I’ve not been able to give it a proper test drive. The weather has gotten really cold at the minute, so my skin is freaking out and I’ve had to switch to a repairing face oil. Once it balances back out, I’ll be giving this product another whirl. But my first impressions are SO good, I really can’t wait to use it again because it feels lovely on the skin.

Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum is £81.50

Dermalogica Active Moist

When I first applied Dermalogica Active Moist, I instantly noticed how incredible the texture is. It’s such a lightweight product, but it feels nourishing. I’d been using this throughout the warmer months, and it still manages to keep my skin hydrated. Granted it needs a bit of support from my face oil, but I expect that because my skin is as dry as a piece of toast. It has an oil-free formula, so doesn’t feel greasy on the skin which I’m all about. It’s a lovely product, and I’ll definitely continue to use it. I think it’s going to be even better when I’m using it abroad and my skin isn’t as damaged by the cold weather.

Dermalogica Active Moist is £33.50

Dermalogica Solar Defence Booster

Lastly, I’ve been using the Dermalogica Solar Defence Booster. And before I share my thoughts, I wanted to emphasise how useless I am when it comes to SPF – I just always forget to apply it. I know it’s the most important step of a skincare routine, but I’m in a terrible habit that I need breaking out of. The formula of this product though is amazing. Usually I hate SPF’s because they leave a white tint on my skin and just feel really heavy. Not this one. When you apply it, you can’t even tell it’s there. I typically mix it in with a moisturiser and apply it to my whole face. It’s also got some extra skin boosting benefits, so that’s an added bonus too. I’m going to make it a mission of mine to actually use this consistently while I’m away. Maybe if I can use it solidly for 2 weeks, I can get into the habit of using an SPF all the time? Fingers crossed!

Dermalogica Solar Defence Booster is £44

I’ve previously said that Dermalogica was in my top 3 skincare ranges. However after using these products for the last couple of weeks, I think it’s edging slightly into first place. At least 3 of the products above are going to become staples in my skincare routine, which is a huge thing for me to commit to, but that’s how I’m currently feeling.

If you haven’t tried anything from Dermalogica before, I’d highly recommend it. You can even pop into your local counter and get a skin consultation to properly advise you on what products you should be using.

Check out the full range here.

Have you used Dermalogica products before? Let me know your favourite on Instagram.

I was kindly gifted this products, but all opinions are 100% honest and my own.
